Technical Tour Olkiluoto

TECHNICAL TOUR

TVOOLKILUOTO
Friday 20 April 2012

WNFC offers a technical tour to Olkiluoto on the west coast of Finland - this site is home to two of the most significant nuclear fuel cycle projects underway anywhere in the world:

(i) The construction of what will be the world's first underground geologic disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The ‘Onkalo’ facility at Olkiluoto is a pilot tunnel facility over 400 metres deep. It will be used for the advanced characterisation of the granite rock in advance of the site safely housing spent Finnish fuel in highly engineered containers.

(ii) The construction of the giant ‘first-of-a kind’ European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR) which will provide 1600MW of electric energy to the Nordic grid. The project is at an advanced stage and the reactor will be the first of the ‘Generation 3+’ type - these are designed with enhanced safety features and offer highly reliable economic performance.
